03 Developing knowledge sharing

Ever since the Foundation was created, disseminating knowledge and scientific progress beyond borders and disciplines has been the lifeblood of our work. This key priority helps to promote global health security and support expertise among current and future public health leaders.

Improving public health on a global scale necessarily involves pushing the boundaries of knowledge. As this is one of the Mérieux Foundation’s fundamental goals, we strive to bring decision-makers, researchers, and health professionals together through a variety of learning initiatives: intensive courses, high-level conferences, and global events that accelerate networking and reinforce global health capacity.

Promoting the emergence of a global network

Bringing together disciplines and parts of the world that have few opportunities to engage in dialog, our approach to knowledge management aims to break down silos and help create communities of experts able to respond with one voice to health questions and emergencies. Developed by scientific committees made up of recognized experts, our events evolve over time to adapt to scientific advances, on-the-ground needs, and public health priorities, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. These gatherings are also designed as springboards to give attendees the opportunity to debate emerging challenges and forge long-lasting bonds.

Les Pensières: a place of excellence focused on public health

The Mérieux Foundation’s knowledge-sharing activities are supported by the Les Pensières Center for Global Health, with expertise based on over 40 years of dialog and engagement in the fight against infectious disease. Owned by the Mérieux Foundation and situated on the shores of Lake Annecy, the Les Pensières Center is a platform for reflection and sharing that offers an outstanding working environment (with high-end, flexible conference rooms, catering facilities, and accommodation) to organizations, associations, and institutions in the health sector.

In 2025, the Les Pensières Center continued its role as a center of excellence in global health. Throughout the year, more than 8,000 participants attended nearly 200 events, covering topics such as vaccination, medical diagnosis, and antimicrobial resistance. Intensive courses, such as ADVAC on vaccinology and ACDx on diagnosis, contribute to the international influence of the Foundation’s activities.

Advanced training courses

To ensure scientific progress and innovations are reflected in public health policies, the Mérieux Foundation organizes five intensive training courses every year for decision-makers and scientists. Developed in partnership with outstanding institutions, these courses emphasize interdisciplinarity, immersion, and peer-to-peer exchange to encourage the development of far-reaching professional relationships.

Fair access to training

To ensure health professionals from countries with limited resources can take part, the Mérieux Foundation develops a number of financial partnerships in order to offer study grants. This is a fundamental aspect of our mission – enabling local players to benefit from training essential to their practice, develop their autonomy, and pass on their knowledge within their communities.

Public health conferences

As part of its collaboration within a network of international experts, the Mérieux Foundation organizes scientific gatherings on medical advances and important subjects in the fight against infectious diseases. These events contribute to the goal of spreading knowledge, developing coordinated global strategies and strengthening the prevention of epidemic and pandemic risks.
